POSTPONED DUE TO HOT WEATHER

Join us on <strike>Thursday, 25th June</strike> as we work on the classic bridleway below Derwent Edge, heading down to Cutthroat Bridge.

We’ll meet at the Cutthroat Bridge layby on the A57 at 10am and finish up by 2pm.
Here’s the location: https://maps.app.goo.gl/brSitMJdym8ZEC9N6

Trail days are a great way to meet people and try trail maintenance— everyone is welcome.
Whether you’re a biker, runner, hiker, horse rider, or have never picked up a shovel before, you’re welcome to join us and earn some trail karma.
No experience needed.
We’ll be at the dig site from about 10:20am to 1:30pm. Please bring warm clothes, plenty of snacks, and something to drink.
We’ll provide all the training, tips, and tools you need for a safe and productive day.
Feel free to stop by during your ride and join us on the trail. Just let us know if you’re coming so we can bring enough tools. Experience and strength help, but they aren’t required to volunteer.

We’ll mainly be doing:
Digging drainage channels with spades and mattocks
Reshaping some lines

If you have any questions, just message me or email james@peakdistrictmtb.org.

The Steel Valley ride was a massive success this year – over a hundred riders registered for the 31 mile event and in the process brought a hefty chunk of money to the Mend Our Mountains appeal for Cut Gate.

The ride is an annual event to help raise funds for the Steel Valley Project – a countryside management charity in Stocksbridge working to improve the environment for people and wildlife in the Upper Don area.

But this year it also helped to raise funds for the British Mountaineering Council ‘Mend Our Mountains: Make One Million’ campaign, raising money to repair the boggy sections on the iconic Cut Gate bridleway, linking Langsett and Howden reservoirs. As the Steel Valley Ride route travelled over Cut Gate, the charity decided to donate a percentage of this year’s entry fees to the campaign, totalling a fantastic £468.

Tom Newman, Project Manager at the Steel Valley Project said “Everybody deserves massive congratulations for completing their own challenge, whether it was to finish quickly or just to finish, push their mileage on a bike, or raise money for charity.”

Some finished in an impressive three to four hours, whereas others made use of the whole day, but special mention goes to one lady who entered the ride after stopping smoking and starting mountain biking only five months before completing the event.

Stocksbridge Mayor, Cllr Julie Grocutt, started off the riders in the morning and then drew two winners for a prize draw to win prizes donated by Trek.

“We’d like to say a huge thanks to the Steel Valley project for their contribution,” said Inigo Atkin, Mend Our Mountains: Make One Million co-ordinator. “Every little helps so each and every rider’s efforts will really help to achieve this challenging target.

It’s really very simple, Derbyshire County Council (DCC) has put its latest proposed plans for repair work on Rushup Edge / Chapel Gate out for public consultation.

This link takes you to the page containing drawings and specifications suggested by DCC for the work and the consultation questionnaire.

We intend to oppose this work on exactly the same grounds as we did 4 years ago and ever since, the work is not required at this scale. Any work should be sympathetic to the landscape and the position of the track as a high moorland trail. We would want to see any work undertaken to be more akin to that carried out on the Roych – stone pitching.

If you think that any work on this route should be light of touch rather than smoothing the route, introduction of concrete and flags, then please take the time to compose a response to DCC.

This is a short video made by James Irwin of Bike Garage and Peak District MTB that shows what the track is like today.

We only have until the 10 July so let’s get the word out and let DCC know what we think of the plans.

Anyone with any specific expertise: legal, planning, engineering or anyone who has a disability or is involved with another user groups and who would like to help shape our response, please could you get in touch with our committee member Esther at esther@peakdistrictmtb.org

For anyone who hasn’t heard of this proposed route repair and wants a quick catch up, here’s a link to an article from last year will get you up to speed pretty quickly.

Many thanks.

Aston Bridleway (Hope BW 20)

22nd March
This is a route we have worked on before. We’ll be checking and clearing previous work as well as installing new drains further up the trail on the more open sections. This bridleway has become increasingly popular and there are a number of sections that would benefit from some sensitive repairs.
Meeting at Cafe Adventure, Hope (click for map)

The Roaches Estate (Staffordshire Moorlands)

Every month
***CANCELLED – Saturday September 8th***

Unfortunately we have had to cancel the dig day on Saturday September 8th. The recent devastating fire on the Roaches means that volunteer schedules are being revised, and we plan to set up new regular trail maintenance days with Staffordshire Wildlife Trust. We’ll share information on the new dates as soon as we can.

This is a new area we’re keen to give some love to, in the South West corner of the Peak District on the Roaches Estate. The Gradbach permissive bridleway needs some drainage work and the original line needs re-establishing. We’re excited to announce that dig days at the Roaches are lined up for every month (usually the second Saturday).

Contact dan@peakdistrictmtb.org for more info on Roaches dig days.

Hollins Cross to Greenlands Bridleway (Edale BW 20)

26th April & 17th May
Realignment of gullied sections to stop path spread. Knocking off narrow rutted sections together, whilst still keeping a fun trail to ride. Clearing of the wet section around the gate. Potential to bring the trail back into a much more usable, fun state.
Meeting at the Mam Nick lay-by (click for map)
