The Trail Pot is a groundbreaking charity* that has stepped up to support grassroots mountain biking projects throughout the United Kingdom. The charity has been founded by a team of passionate MTB volunteers including Peak District MTB’s very own previous Chair, Chris Maloney.
What is the Trail Pot?
Launched as a dedicated National Mountain Biking Development Fund, The Trail Pot aims to fill a crucial gap in the mountain biking world: funding for grassroots projects. Recognising that money often determines whether a trail network can become a reality, the charity will work to gather resources from diverse contributors, including individual riders, local businesses, and major sponsors.
Through its unique reinvestment model, the funds collected are distributed based on regional contributions and needs. For instance, if a certain percentage of donations originates from a specific area, an equivalent percentage of the fund is allocated to support trail-building or maintenance projects in that region. This equitable and transparent approach will ensure that all mountain biking communities benefit, no matter their size or prominence.
How Does it Work?
The charity’s reinvestment model operates on a structured annual cycle:
- Fundraising Phase: Resources are raised from various supporters, including grassroots groups, small businesses, and larger industry stakeholders.
- Application Phase: Trail groups submit proposals for funding, highlighting the potential impact and sustainability of their projects.
- Selection and Scoring: Trustees independently review applications based on criteria like community benefit, environmental responsibility, and project deliverability.
- Allocation of Funds: Approved projects receive financial support to turn their ideas into action.
Core Values and Impact
The Trail Pot adheres to ten core principles that guide its decision-making process. These include prioritising sustainability, inclusivity, innovation, and accountability. Projects must align with these values to receive funding, ensuring the supported initiatives contribute positively to both the sport and the environment. This framework helps enhance the reputation of mountain biking, attract new participants, and build bridges with other community stakeholders
Why Does This Matter?
Mountain biking trails are often managed by local volunteers who dedicate countless hours to maintenance, advocacy, and negotiation with landowners. However, financial barriers frequently hinder their efforts. The Trail Pot offers a lifeline, enabling these groups to achieve their goals while promoting environmentally responsible trail-building practices.
The Bigger Picture
As the UK’s first charity solely focused on grassroots mountain biking, The Trail Pot represents a new opportunity for the sport to develop. It’s is expected to showcase the power of community, the importance of sustainable practices, and the need to invest in outdoor recreation.
