Roaches Trail Maintenance

We have regular trail maintenance sessions at the Roaches Estate in the Staffordshire Moorlands in conjunction with Staffordshire Wildlife Trust. These are usually on a Saturday in every other month.

If you’re on the Roaches estate and see any trail obstacles – puddles, low-hanging branches, blockages, mud – please email us with details. Unblocking drains is something that can be done simply with a pair of stout boots: Kick a Drain.

CANCELLED FOR 2020 – British Heart Foundation Peak District Mountain Bike Challenge

CANCELLED FOR 2020 – (was Sat 4th April 2020)

Sadly this great event – our 2018 event of the year – has been cancelled for 2020, but will return in 2021. BHF state:

“We’re sorry to confirm that the Peak District MTB Challenge will not go ahead and sadly, we are unable to reschedule to another date in 2020.

Along with the rest of the UK, we have been closely following Government guidance relating to mass gatherings and social distancing. With continued uncertainty, we are unable to guarantee the event’s viability at this time and therefore feel that it is only right that the event is cancelled.

The safety of our participants, supporters, staff and volunteers is always at the forefront of our decision. We are disappointed that the event will no longer take place, but we look forward to welcoming you in 2021.”

If you entered this event, contact BHF for your options, or checkout their webpage here.

Our dig days start at 10am and finish by 4pm and all tools are provided. We can provide more specific information as needed, or you can check out our Facebook page for updates. Please let us know if you plan to attend so we can bring enough tools. If you wish to meet us on the trail or join us for part of the day please let us know.

Aston Bridleway (Hope BW 20)

22nd March
This is a route we have worked on before. We’ll be checking and clearing previous work as well as installing new drains further up the trail on the more open sections. This bridleway has become increasingly popular and there are a number of sections that would benefit from some sensitive repairs.
Meeting at Cafe Adventure, Hope (click for map)

The Roaches Estate (Staffordshire Moorlands)

Every month
***CANCELLED –  Saturday September 8th***

Unfortunately we have had to cancel the dig day on Saturday September 8th. The recent devastating fire on the Roaches means that volunteer schedules are being revised, and we plan to set up new regular trail maintenance days with Staffordshire Wildlife Trust. We’ll share information on the new dates as soon as we can.

This is a new area we’re keen to give some love to, in the South West corner of the Peak District on the Roaches Estate. The Gradbach permissive bridleway needs some drainage work and the original line needs re-establishing. We’re excited to announce that dig days at the Roaches are lined up for every month (usually the second Saturday).

Contact dan@peakdistrictmtb.org for more info on Roaches dig days.

Hollins Cross to Greenlands Bridleway (Edale BW 20)

26th April & 17th May
Realignment of gullied sections to stop path spread. Knocking off narrow rutted sections together, whilst still keeping a fun trail to ride. Clearing of the wet section around the gate. Potential to bring the trail back into a much more usable, fun state.
Meeting at the Mam Nick lay-by (click for map)

The Roaches Estate (Staffordshire Moorlands)

12th May – see above

Mam Nick to Greenlands Bridleway (Edale BW 13)

7th June
A route that we worked on a number of years ago to improve drainage, repair gullied sections and define the rideable line.
Meeting at Mam Nick lay-by  (see map)

The Roaches Estate (Staffordshire Moorlands)

Sunday 10th June – see above
